June 8, 2007, Newsletter Issue #18: Requirements to Become a Teacher

Tip of the Week

Each college program and state are independent when it comes to degree requirements. Individual school districts can also be specific in what skills required for their educators before they are considered for employment.

Generally, a degree requirement will involve completing a four or five year bachelors degree in elementary or secondary education. Teaching certification is earned upon graduation. One resource for deciding on teacher training and development is the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE.org). It lists programs, articles, and general information for those interested in pursuing an education degree.

Those who are interested in earning the skills required for educators but who have a degree in something other than education, can enroll in post- collegiate programs. Peterson’s (www.petersons.org) can guide a wannabe teacher in the right direction to discover online and traditional routes to learn teacher training and development.
